By Steve K John

There can be nothing more fascinating than writing a review for a restaurant. In fact, you will only feel like writing a review when you have found something very amazing about its ambience and the food. You will also be able to relive those great moments by writing the review with lingering taste of the dishes you savored. You may also be earning good money out of writing a review.

There are certain basics that you should not forget while writing a restaurant review. For instance, the exact title of the restaurant, its address, contact details complete with a link to its website. After all, you wish to reciprocate their hospitality in your own way.

While describing the ambience, take a few steps back. A good restaurant is recognized by its locale. Describe it in few words. All restaurants make their entrance point very attractive. Describe the light, shade, the entrance door and the demeanor of the guard keeping the door. These small things bring confidence in the mind of the reader.

The details of the menu should be given in a manner that the reader thinks that he is sitting in the restaurant and scrutinizing the menu himself. Give the entire range of entr?e choice together with whether the menu is a specialty joint or assorted. Sometimes some drinks are specialty.

The service is of utmost importance. The way the patrons and the servers treated you is worth mentioning together with their attendance during your stay at the restaurant. The time taken to serve a normal menu item and in serving something you specially mentioned with slight alteration is worth noting.

Your vocabulary to describe the quality of the appetizer, starter, main dishes and the dessert should be professional. If you are poorer in this respect then refer to some hosted review in the internet to enlighten yourself. Be specific and truthful. The reader is critically going through the review.

The review should now be written down in the space provided on the website of the restaurant. Each time the review is viewed, an advertisement is served and you earn points, which would convert into money after a specified period. You may earn $200 to $300 in a month’s time from writing a single review.

Beware! If you are a good restaurant reviewer, you shall be invited by others to write reviews. Eat less and taste more.

One of the most interesting things for a Restaurant Reviewer is having a pleasurable experience and then all of a sudden some unexpected thing occurs. After traveling around the United States and Canada for some 5-years I noticed that the service in some of the more respected restaurant chains was quite uneven.

Meaning not only was quality control at one extreme or the other or customer service hot or cold, but that consistency was quite varying from store to store or outlet to outlet. Sometimes the service was fantastic, sometimes ho-hum and on rare occasion horrific. Let me tell you some theories I developed after taking Restaurant News, Franchising Times and C-Store News for years, while also traveling and seeing it all for my self.

The theories of retail dining and the realities of what goes on are light-years from Ray Kroc’s motto’s for his early stores. First, one of the biggest issues is employee under-training, local store management and secret shopper programs as a catch all. Another issue is with employees who do not care or are simply oblivious to what they are doing.

One of my recent experiences to be discussed along the subject of; a Restaurant Reviewers Worst Case Scenario happened at a Chain Mexican Food Chain. The semi-Fast Food place was an hour from closing on a slow week-night. Getting a jump on the store clean-up I assume was the reason.

An employee came over to the trash area, just a ways from where we were sitting and started pumping ammonia cleaner into the trash can area and had the open trash can sitting between us and her, which was quite smelly. Next she sprayed down the trash can with the toxic fumes and left them there to soak in? Or for dwell time to help in cleaning.

Then proceeded to spray the area or soak the inside of the box where the trash can goes. This was getting quite hard to breath. Next seeing that the trash can had the cleaner dried on, she put more on to loosen it up and then wipe it with a rag, then hang the rag on the seat back nearest us?

Should I go on? This is just one problem we have, people just do not get it. I certainly hope this article is of interest and that is has propelled thought. The goal is simple; to help you in your quest to be the best in 2007. I thank you for reading my many articles on diverse subjects, which interest you.

Writing a restaurant review is a fun way to share your thoughts and impressions about your dining experience. To write an informative review, you need to have knowledge about what key points you should include in your review. Not only is properly describing the food important, but you must have an understanding about the details of the restaurant. Once you have knowledge of the essential points to include, you then can present a well structured and organized restaurant review.

The following are a number of helpful tips to help you write a restaurant review:

1. Before you write a restaurant review, it is important to know how to structure the review. Make sure you are very descriptive and detailed. It is a personal review so emphasize your own writing style. Write complete sentences and use plenty of descriptive words and phrases. Write it in chronological order that includes from the moment you enter the restaurant to when you pay the bill and leave. Describe the restaurant in the present tense and in the second person. Using your own personality will help make the review unique.

2. Pick a restaurant you want to review. For example, you might choose Restaurants in Montreal. Or it might not even be a restaurant – it could be a cafe shop in Montreal. You want to make sure that there will be food that you like. When you enter the dining establishment, note such details as the interior appearance that includes the arrangement of tables, furnishings, decorations, colors, lighting, and the cleanliness of the restaurant. Make sure you check out the condition of the bathrooms. As well, make a note of the friendliest of the staff, how long you have to wait to be seated and its location, and if the hostess asks if you would like a beverage. When you are seated, make a note of the atmosphere of the restaurant. Is it friendly, extremely busy and loud, or relaxing?

3. Once you receive a menu, note the variety of meal choices, prices, any unique dishes, and if there are any healthy meal options. You should have an appetizer, entr?e, and dessert to get the full dining experience. When you receive the meal, note if the food is cooked properly. Does it have a distinctive taste such as spicy or sweet? What is the portion size? When you make your meal selection, make sure it something you normally enjoy eating, As well, note how you are treated by the servers. Are they friendly, well dressed, courteous, knowledgeable about the food and specials, and attentive? Make a note of the meal’s presentation, taste, smell, and if it is hot or cold. Make sure that you use descriptive and creative words. Suggest who may enjoy the food such as families or people who enjoy fine dining dishes. As well, note how long it takes to receive your bill.

When making your recommendation, make sure you have made a note of anything you disliked about the restaurant and the total cost of the meal and if you received good value for your money. When ending the review, make a statement about whether or not you would return.

Writing a restaurant is more than just reviewing the food. By understanding the key elements that should be included in the review, you will have a fun restaurant review experience and hopefully provide valuable consumer information.

Find cafe shop in Montreal, restaurants in Montreal and Montreal beauty salons using Canada’s online restaurant business local directory.

By Anders Zakrisson

Writing informative and objective restaurant reviews can be tricky if you don’t know what to look for or how to structure the review. While everyone has their own level of ambition and knowledge the following guidelines will provide you with a solid base to write informative reviews which are useful to your readers. However, these guidelines can easily be modified for any kind of service or experience and equally well for any other type of media.

Anyway, the guidelines: Keep it centered on the food – Describe it with detail, use adjectives, mention the dishes original name but explain them if it isn’t obvious what they are. Other details to note:

Surroundings – Location, view from window, neighborhood

Atmosphere – Interior design, d?cor, cleanliness, other guests, sound volume, mood

Menu – Menu and Wine list contents broadly described

Service – Speed, presentation and demeanor

Exclusives – What makes this restaurant stand out

Make notes – Mental or in a notebook, if possible take pictures

No novels – don’t work in yourself in the story, keep it factual and unbiased

Don’t go too hard on failures – think of the possible reasons for the failure, is it just an “off” night

Ask for information – make the staff tell you about the establishment, the food, the menu and so on

Sample the courses – If you can’t sample the whole menu, try to sample a few dishes at least with the help of your friends

Extras – You can nick (or ask for) press material, menus and so on to use as reference later, this is also often found on the restaurants website if they have one

And don’t forget to keep it personal! The review should reflect your experience there, it might sound counter-intuitive to keep it factual, unbiased and personal at the same time, however it really isn’t. What it means is that although the dinner might be a part of a big night out or some kind of celebration that you want to write about, those things should not be the backbone of the review even if they might be mentioned. The review is about the establishment, not you.

To illustrate my point I’ll finish with an example, an review of the Beirut Cafe in Stockholm. Although my knowledge of Lebanese food is not the best it serves as a good example for a nicely structured review of the compact type:

First off, Beirut Cafe is very popular so book your table in advance. My party showed up a Tuesday at 7pm and it was jammed! The host was very helpful and eventually managed to seat us in the lounge area. The locations is a little bit off, it’s not that it’s very far from the central parts of Stockholm, it’s just that there’s nothing else that way except fancy residences. There’s a mixed clientele although there’s mostly groups probably having some kind of after-work get together.

They have a wide array of mezes with a very good overall quality. The Kras Nana and Sojok stands out as the best mezes. The minced meat beef with mint and lemon (Kras Nana) is perfectly balanced and the lamb sausage with vegetables (Sojok) is without competition the hottest dish with the most punch served (in our selection at least). Most of the other ones just beautifully complement each other without taking over the show. The only thing not quite up on par with the rest was the Sojok bel baid (lamb sausage omelet), it was a little bit soggy and bland, maybe because I only sampled that one towards the end of our sitting.

The wine list is rather limited although they have an impressive selection of the Lebanese producer Chateau Musars champagne from 1956 and forward. A Merlot (Santa Helena Vernus Blend) and two red wines from Chateu Musar are available by the glass, the Merlot is fairly average while the least expensive of the Chateu Musars (can’t remember the name though) is very good, full of life without too much tannin and great value for the money.

I cannot stress how good atmosphere they have created, the interior design is just fabulous and never fails in any detail, the music is clear but never intruding, the service is very swift but at no point rushed and the service staff is helpful and friendly.

Beirut Cafe is an establishment of international class that’s truly one of the highlights in Stockholm.

Are you one of those restaurant diners who are looking for a reliable restaurant review and are often confused by the myriad of different restaurant critics and diners comments that are out there on the web? Or, have you found that your expectations created from a restaurant review have not lived up to the diners comments or critics reviews?

With over 23,000 restaurants in New Jersey alone to choose from, and approximately 80 percent of the new restaurants failing in the first 3 years, it’s no wonder restaurant diners are having a difficult time choosing where to dine. This process becomes especially difficult when attempting to choose a fine dining restaurant where the preparation and quality of food is to be taken into account along with the decor, and/or atmosphere, and service.

Here is what to look for when searching the web or reading a publication that rates and reviews a restaurant.

The Five Most Important Points to Look for in a Good Restaurant Review.

Recognize that all restaurants have off-nights and that all restaurant critics and diners have had experiences that may or may not be representative of the restaurants performance.

Seek out and research the opinions of the different components of the dining public. The dining public includes the serious restaurant diner, the casual restaurant diner, as well as the professional restaurant critic. These are the very people that get out to eat at restaurants and who ultimately determine the performance and success of a restaurant.

Be aware of outdated reviews of restaurants that have since changed owners, executive chefs, and wait staffs that render their reviews valueless.

If you are researching the web and/or publications, try to find a consensus amongst the reviews and give little value to the review that is way out of line with the consensus, good or bad. Weigh the quality of the comments as well as the quantity of the comments.

Many restaurant owners say that they don’t take much stock in restaurant reviews. However, they are quick to put up plaques at the entrance of their restaurant that provide favorable commentary from restaurant critics, or post these reviews on their restaurant web site. Be careful to note the date on these reviews and to check for restaurant owners and executive chefs who are no longer there.

Not only can writing restaurant reviews be an enjoyable experience because you can try all sorts of different foods, it can also be a creative way to express your opinion. There are a number of different rules to follow when writing a quality review. It is important that you understand how to determine the quality of food as well as the restaurant.

The following list highlights a number of tips on how to write a restaurant review:

1. Restaurant Selection: Pick a restaurant that you find interesting and make a reservation. Make sure that it is food that you normally eat and like.

2. Restaurant Features: When you dine at the restaurant, note the decor, atmosphere, wait staff, kitchen staff, parking, cleanliness, other diners, and location.

3. Write Review: Right after dining, find a place to write a review.

4. Describe your Impression of the Style and Decor of the Restaurant: This includes color scheme, decorations, themes, and seating arrangement. Describe the arrangement of the table. Also, you should discuss the exterior of the restaurant. Is it in an accessible location? How was the parking? Was the exterior attractive?

5. Dicuss the Patrons and Staff. What types of people were dining at the restaurant? (Professionals, families, informal diners) Was the staff helpful and nice? Did you have to wait long to receive your food? Did you have to wait long for a server?

6. Discuss the Food: What type of food does the restaurant serve? (Italian, Mexican, Fast Food… etc.) Provide a few of the different foods they offer as well as the cost. Was your food the right temperature? How did the food taste? Was it fully cooked? Was the plate of food appealing to look at? What did you like? Was there anything you did not like? Was the food mushy or have a nice texture? How fresh was the food? Did the food have a nice aroma? Was the review worth the price you paid? The food must have the most words in the review.

7. Organization of the Review: Structure the review chronologically. Write about the moment you entered the restaurant until you paid and left. Write with clear and concise words. Keep topic discussions together and not scattered throughout the review. Use vivid words like amazing, breath taking. Discuss the ingredients. Write using your own personality to make it unique. Don’t make your review a story about your visit to the restaurant. What makes the restaurant so unique? Make sure you provide a recommendation.

8. Writing Mechanics: Describe the restaurant in the present tense. Write in the second person or using a passive tense. Do not make the sentences too short. The review should flow when one is reading it. Avoid pronouns as much as possible.

Writing a review that includes a variety of features about the restaurant will make your review very professional. By implementing a number of writing tips, your review will educate and inform the consumer. Writing a review is an enjoyable way to express your view.
